Rajeev Sangal is a renowned researcher in the fields of Machine Translation, Artificial Intelligence, and Natural Language Processing, who has also worked extensively to promote Universal Human Values in education. He served as a Professor at International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad from 2018 to 2022.
Earlier, he was the first Director of Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi from 2013 to 2018, where he contributed significantly to the growth and development of the Institute. Before joining IIT (BHU), he played a major role in establishing and strengthening IIIT Hyderabad, serving as its Director from 2002 to 2013. Prior to this, he was a faculty member at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur from 1982 to 1999 and also headed the Department of Computer Science and Engineering between 1987 and 1990.
Dr. Sangal completed his BTech in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kanpur and later earned his MS and PhD in Computer and Information Science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1980.
In 2002, he founded the Language Technologies Research Centre at IIIT Hyderabad, which later became one of the leading academic centers for Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing research in the region.
He also played an important role in introducing the Universal Human Values course at IIIT Hyderabad in 2005. The course was later adopted by many universities and colleges across India, benefiting thousands of students and educators through large-scale teacher training programs.
Apart from his academic and administrative contributions, Dr. Sangal has served on the editorial boards of several reputed journals, including Computational Linguistics and Computer Science and Informatics. He has also contributed as an editor and reviewer for major international journals and conferences related to Artificial Intelligence, Machine Translation, and Computational Linguistics.
